The Journalism Department offers an ideal educational program for students interested in the media world and seeking to develop expertise in news production and the creation of written and visual content. This department aims to teach students the fundamentals of journalism, its ethical values, and current media dynamics, while also equipping them with practical skills. Students gain expertise in areas such as news writing, interviewing, media research, digital journalism, and visual communication, equipping them for a successful career in the rapidly changing media environment. Program Objective

The aim of the undergraduate journalism program is to prepare students to become thoughtful, ethical journalists who think critically, act with a strong sense of social responsibility, and are ready to work confidently in the digital age with both solid theory and hands-on skills.

 

Educational program and practical opportunities

  • Balance of theory and practice: While the curriculum includes courses such as news writing, digital media, media ethics, and press history, students gain hands-on experience through the Media Practice Workshop by contributing to the Kampüs Haber newspaper and the GAÜNilef news portal.

  • Career paths for graduates: Graduates may work as reporters, editors, content producers, or social media specialists in newspapers, television channels, news agencies, and digital media platforms. In addition, they may be employed as corporate communication specialists or work in press offices of public institutions and related organizations.

 

Program learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, students will have acquired the following competencies:

  • Knowledge of the fundamental concepts, theories, and historical development of journalism.

  • The ability to effectively apply news gathering, research, verification, and writing techniques.

  • Skills to produce content for traditional and digital platforms (newspapers, television, radio, web, and social media).

  • The capacity to act in accordance with media ethics, press law, and principles of professional responsibility.

  • The ability to identify misinformation and manipulation through critical thinking and media literacy skills.

  • Understands the structure and production processes of media organizations and is able to evaluate their editorial policies and strategic preferences.

  • Develops sensitivity toward racist, sexist, and other discriminatory practices; gains awareness of approaches that strengthen democratic life.

 

Graduation Requirements

In accordance with the Gaziantep University Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations, the requirements for graduation are as follows:

  • Course Completion: Students must successfully complete all compulsory and elective courses in the curriculum with a minimum grade of DD or S (Satisfactory).

  • Grade Point Average: A minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.00 out of 4.00 is required.

  • Credit Load: A total of 240 ECTS credits must be completed over eight semesters.

  • Degree and Honors: Graduates with a CGPA between 3.00 and 3.49 are awarded an Honor Degree, while those with a CGPA of 3.50 and above are awarded a High Honor Degree. This distinction is indicated on the diploma.

 

Quality Assurance and Accreditation

The unit places great importance on establishing governance models and internal quality assurance mechanisms that will ensure institutional transformation.

  • Process Management: Educational, instructional, and administrative processes are carried out in a transparent and traceable manner through the EBYS (Electronic Document Management System).

  • Stakeholder Participation: The participation of internal and external stakeholders is ensured in strategic decision-making processes through student feedback, surveys, and meetings.

  • Monitoring and Improvement: Program objectives and learning outcomes are periodically reviewed and updated in alignment with the Turkish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (TQF-HE).

  • Social Contribution: Within the scope of Social Responsibility Projects (SRP), awareness-raising activities are conducted at local and national levels, thereby fulfilling institutional social responsibility.
